Europe puts the health workforce crisis higher on the agenda
Europe’s health workforce challenge has moved further up the EU agenda. In September, the European Parliament adopted its own-initiative report on an EU Health Workforce Crisis Plan, reinforcing the political focus on workforce sustainability, working conditions, skills and health-system resilience
For hospital and healthcare managers, this is not only a recruitment issue. It is increasingly about retention, professional development, workforce planning, organisation of work and leadership capacity.
EAHM will continue to follow this agenda from a management perspective — connecting European policy developments with the operational realities faced by hospital and healthcare leaders across our network.

Paris strengthens a shared European direction
EAHM’s Strategic Session brought representatives of its national member associations together in Paris for a focused exchange on the Association’s future direction, member value and European role.
The discussion reinforced a shared ambition: to translate the strength of national experience into greater European value for hospital and healthcare managers — through stronger representation, cooperation, knowledge exchange and practical opportunities for members.

Digital access, health data and EHDS readiness
Germany’s draft GeDIG framework brings together electronic patient records, digital referrals, access pathways and the secondary use of health data, while preparing the health system for implementation of the European Health Data Space.
For hospital leaders, the development shows how digital access, interoperability and data governance are increasingly becoming part of the same management agenda — requiring organisational readiness alongside technological change.

Competency-based access to hospital leadership
France is strengthening competency-based access to the hospital director profession, placing greater emphasis on professional experience, leadership capability, management knowledge and practical assessment.
The approach provides a useful reference for the wider European discussion on how healthcare systems should select, prepare and recognise the professionals responsible for leading increasingly complex organisations

Europe’s health ambitions need stronger management
Europe is asking its health systems to become more resilient, digital, integrated and sustainable. But these ambitions will only be delivered if organisations have the management capacity to turn policy, technology and investment into better care.
“Management is the implementation capacity of a health system.”

The European Health Data Space is becoming hospital governance
The European Health Data Space is moving from European regulation into an operational challenge for hospitals and health systems.
For hospital leaders, implementation goes well beyond IT. It requires attention to data governance, interoperability, organisational accountability, access to health information and the secondary use of data.
The challenge is to translate European requirements into workable governance arrangements, responsibilities and operational processes.

Mental health at work is hospital governance
Psychosocial risk is increasingly moving from the margins of wellbeing programmes into the centre of organisational risk management.
For hospitals, workforce shortages, shift work, emotional pressure, exposure to violence and organisational change make mental health at work a leadership, workforce and governance issue — not simply an individual wellbeing concern.
For healthcare managers, the challenge is to integrate psychosocial risk into workforce strategy, occupational safety, organisational design and day-to-day leadership.
