The European Health Data Space moves further into implementation
The European Health Data Space (EHDS) has reached another important milestone.
Three new implementing regulations entered into force in October, establishing detailed rules for MyHealth@EU, cross-border identification and authentication, and the description of health datasets for secondary use.
For hospital and healthcare managers, the implications extend beyond digital infrastructure. Interoperability, data governance, organisational accountability and secure information exchange are becoming essential elements of healthcare management.
The new rules will apply progressively, giving healthcare organisations time to develop the necessary capabilities.
The challenge is no longer simply understanding European requirements. It is preparing organisations to implement them effectively.

European Hospital Management Battle gets underway
ONE HOSPITAL · DIFFERENT STRATEGIES · EIGHT ROUNDS
October marked the launch of the inaugural EAHM European Hospital Management Battle 2026, developed with HFX Training using the Healthcare Hero simulation.
National teams nominated through EAHM member associations are invited to lead the same virtual hospital, making strategic decisions across workforce, capacity, quality, financial sustainability and operational performance.
The initiative combines competition with practical learning, creating opportunities for managers from different countries and professional backgrounds to test decisions, compare approaches and reflect on the trade-offs of hospital management.
The inaugural edition will culminate in the European Final on 11 December 2026.

From Seoul: Leadership development and international cooperation
EAHM was represented by Secretary-General Leandro Luís at the 49th IHF World Hospital Congress in Seoul, an international gathering of hospital and healthcare leaders focused on global learning and local action.
As part of the programme, the Secretary-General participated in the ACHE–IHF Global CEO–COO Boot Camp, exploring executive leadership, governance, organisational performance, financial stewardship and the capabilities required to lead increasingly complex healthcare organisations.
During the Congress, the EAHM Secretary-General also met with representatives of the International Hospital Federation to initiate discussions on a possible framework for future cooperation.
These initial exchanges open opportunities to explore stronger collaboration in leadership development, professional competencies, knowledge exchange and international engagement.
EAHM's objective is to bring international learning closer to the needs of hospital and healthcare managers across its European member associations.

System leadership: a new reality for healthcare leaders
EAHM President Alexandre Lourenço was a speaker at the Health Management Institute of Ireland's Annual Conference, dedicated to System Leadership–Driven Modernisation of Health and Social Care.
In his presentation, “System Leadership: A New Reality for Healthcare Leaders”, he explored a central challenge facing European health systems:
“Health leaders are now accountable for outcomes they do not control.”
Drawing on experience from Ireland and Portugal, including integrated health regions, Local Health Units and practical approaches to managing patient flows across services, he argued that organisational reform alone cannot deliver integrated care.
Effective system leadership requires collaboration across institutional boundaries, shared responsibility, professional management capabilities and a stronger focus on population outcomes.
The message has relevance across Europe: hospitals increasingly operate as part of wider networks of care, and healthcare leaders must be equipped to manage those connections.
EAHM thanks the HMI leadership and organising team for bringing this important European discussion to Dublin.

From preparedness to antifragility
HEALTHCARE WEEK LUXEMBOURG 2026
Healthcare Week Luxembourg, held on 30 September and 1 October, explored how healthcare systems can move beyond preparing for disruption towards developing the capacity to adapt, learn and improve through uncertainty.
Under the theme Resilience of Tomorrow's Healthcare Systems: From Preparedness to Antifragility, the programme addressed the roles of professionals, organisational systems and Artificial Intelligence in building more resilient healthcare.
The initiative, supported by the EAHM Full Member network through the Fédération des Hôpitaux Luxembourgeois, offers a valuable perspective on leadership, risk management and organisational transformation.

Beyond technology: what ParaVerse teaches us about patient-centred innovation
ULRICH KÖSSL & STEFAN STALDER · SWITZERLAND
Innovation in healthcare should begin with a question: does it make a meaningful difference to the people we serve?
In EAHM Voices, Ulrich Kössl and Stefan Stalder of the Swiss Paraplegic Centre share lessons from ParaVerse, an eye-controlled extended-reality initiative designed to improve digital accessibility for people with severe physical impairments.
Their experience highlights the importance of co-design, usability, multidisciplinary collaboration and integrating technology into real healthcare workflows.
For healthcare managers, the message extends far beyond rehabilitation:
“innovation creates value when it responds to genuine needs and can be implemented sustainably.”

From startup innovation to better healthcare: EAHM at healthhub Open Innovation
LISBON, PORTUGAL · OCTOBER 2026
EAHM Secretary-General Leandro Luís participated as a jury member in the healthhub Open Innovation Program, an initiative of Unicorn Factory Lisboa connecting emerging healthcare solutions with real clinical challenges.
The programme focuses on preventive care in three areas:
Cardiology · Respiratory Medicine · Oncology
The evaluation process considers clinical relevance, innovation, feasibility and readiness for implementation, with the aim of identifying promising solutions that can progress towards real-world hospital pilots.
EAHM's participation brought a healthcare management perspective to the assessment, including the potential for operational adoption, demonstrable value and international transferability.
Good innovation is not only about what technology can do. It is about what healthcare organisations can successfully implement.

Have your say on catheter management and infection prevention
The European Health Management Association (EHMA) is conducting a feasibility study exploring a potential European Foley-Free Care Programme, aimed at recognising hospitals demonstrating excellence in catheter management and the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs).
EHMA is seeking hospital managers and professionals responsible for infection prevention, quality improvement or hospital-wide initiatives to participate in 30–45-minute online interviews.
The interviews will explore the potential value of such a programme, organisational interest, barriers to participation and possible approaches to recognition or accreditation.
Interested professionals, or EAHM member associations wishing to suggest suitable participants, are invited to contact Alexandra Olson, EHMA Project Manager.
